Second Euphonium

Lewis Squires

Where are you from?
I was born in Chesterfield and have stayed there all my life.
How long have you played your instrument?

I started on the cornet at 4 years old and moved on to Euphonium when I was 10, so been playing Euph for 16 years
What do you do other than band?

I have been a secondary school maths teacher for 5 years now. I also love sport, in particular football and cricket. I referee mini soccer on a Saturday morning too.
What is your favourite piece of music?

My favourite to play has either been Arabian nights by Stephen Roberts or Fraternity by Thierry Delereyulle.
Have you played with any other bands?
I started with Shirland training band and went through the ranks there. I spent my teenage years at Ireland Colliery Chesterfield band and then moved to Unite the Union in Sheffield for 5 years before moving the Thoresby.
What is your most memorable banding experience?

Hmm, either winning the 1st section yorkshire area or my first grand shield appearance playing Arabian nights.
What is your favourite quote?
Life is not about the final destination, but the journey that gets you there.
Which musician do you admire?

As a euphonium player it would have to be David Childs, he has been the main pioneer for the instrument over the last 10 years. However the best player I have heard live is Tom Hutchinson, his sound and quality is above any I've ever heard on any instrument.
