Thoresby move to a New eHome The Thoresby Colliery Band based in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, are re-launching themselves on the web with a smart new website full of up to date news about the band, players and future engagements. Web Designer Ian McCormick, who also plays euphonium for the Championship section band explained “The old website whilst full of information needed a bit of a revamp. We have designed a brand new site from scratch which we hope readers and our dedicated followers alike will enjoy.” Ian further explained “The new website will keep people informed about the band, its progress, its future events, who’s who and most importantly will provide a valuable link with our Canaries Supporters Club and the Thoresby Youth Band. The Canaries are the stalwart followers of the band who support us in many ways not least of all by faultless attendance at local concerts and generating income through a wide variety of fundraising activities. The Canaries are ably run by Sue Howells who works tirelessly throughout the year with her team of helpers to sell tickets, arrange concerts and venues and sell CDs and other merchandise to support the organisation. Without them running the band would be so much more work and we are indebted to them and hope that the new website will reinforce links between the two parties. Looking Back to 2008 A quick look back to 2008 saw the Thoresby Band compete at Butlins, the Area and the Grand Shield, but without a shadow of a doubt the highlight was the Band's 60th Anniversary which was celebrated by means of a formal Concert and also a Reunion and Social evening in October at the Thoresby Social Club in the heart of Robin Hood Country. The evening was a huge success, and featured the Thoresby Colliery Band, the youth band, and a guest soloist, Grimethorpe star Michael Dodd, who was a former member of the Band. Many other former members of the band were also involved with the successful weekend and it was great to see them and celebrate the successes achieved by the band during those 60 years. The year was closed off by a series of sell out Christmas Concerts at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham as guests of the Nottingham Harmonic Society and conducted by Mark Wardle, the bands new resident conductor. This has become an annual event, and proves the Band’s popularity in Nottingham. Participation in the BBC Radio Nottingham Christmas Concert from Southwell Minster which was broadcast on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day was yet another highlight for the Band. Into 2009 January: 2009 and once again, the band compete at the Butlins Mineworkers Championships, welcoming back Martin Heartfield at the helm for this important and prestigious competition. Thoresby are one of the few bands to have competed at this contest since its inception. The Thoresby Band are proud of its mining heritage and always look forward to supporting this contest that was literally a phoenix from the flames of the former CISWO Mineworkers championships. This coupled with the recent announcement of a grant from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) signals a great start to the year. Thoresby round off this month on the 31st with a fine Grande Concert at “The Crossing”, Worksop’s new exciting venue for progressive and traditional arts. Onwards and upwards for the Thoresby Band. |
