Thoresby Colliery Band to appear at Royal Albert Hall

Thoresby Colliery Band has qualified to represent the Midlands at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall in London later this year.

Conducted by Ian Porthouse, the band delivered a ‘cracking’ performance of Paganini Variations at the Midlands Regional Championships in Bedworth Civic Hall at the weekend. Despite being drawn the dreaded No 1 in the order of play the band held off a strong field, including local rivals Desford and Newstead, to qualify along with the Virtuosi GUS Band.

Band Manager Nick Harris said, “Everyone at Thoresby would like to thank Ian Porthouse for his fantastic work in preparing the band for the competition and also the band's resident conductor Huw Thomas for his hard work.

It’s exactly 10 years since the band last went to the Finals. For many band members, it will be their RAH stage debut. But the band has improved incredibly over the past year and the players thoroughly deserve the reward for the hard work they’ve put in. I’m sure this is just the beginning of many more successful years.”
